Thomas Shawver served four years as a judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps. His civilian career began as an investigator for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He then practiced law with career breaks as publisher of The San Jose Business Journal and Kansas City Magazine. From 1995 to 2012, he owned Bloomsday Books, an antiquarian bookshop in Kansas City. He now writes full time.

A graduate of the University of Kansas, his interests are rugby, collecting rare books and international travel. He is married to a journalist.
